Orust is an island and municipality in Bohuslän on Sweden's west coast, and forms part of a lively archipelago with islands such as Gullholmen, Käringön, Malö and Flatön. Read more about Orust today on their offical site;
Orust had about 18,000 inhabitants in 1900. Many of them emigrated in this period, mainly to the US and Canada but also to Australia, New Zeeland and the UK.
The first known emigrant may have been Olof Jönsson from Torp parish. According to a note in the household exams for the period 1790-1799 'he's married in Amerika'.
The great wave of emigration occured between 1870 and 1914, when approx. 2300 people from Orust left the country. Besides these there were many sailors, seamen, who left without papers, they simply embarked in a foreign port.
In 2002 a book called Emigranter från Östra Orust was published. It was the result of a local project where some 30 enthusiastic genealogists collected all they could find about the emigrants in the various parishes of Orust. This book contains information about what happened to most of them, but there are still gaps to be filled in.
See photos from the book to the left in page named ' Fotoalbum Orustutvandrare' on some located emigrants, and some still to be found.

Ernst was born in Tegneby on October 16 in 1895. He emigrated in 1920 as Hjalmar Johansson. Brother Niklas Petterson in NY was his destination. He probably stayed with his brother for a while but he lived the rest of his life in Connecticut. He married Olga Wourisalo originally from Turku, Finland, and they had a daughter in 1927 named Hazel. Hazel has three children and we hope to be able to reconnect them with their roots in Orust in the nearest future.
Christian Christensson emigrates sometime after 1881, leaving his wife Anna Charlotta Larsdotter and son Karl Johan Mauritz in Sweden. Accused and sentenced for a crime that he probably did not commit, he fled Sweden. Christian's son Karl Johan Mauritz Christiansson, joins his father on August 6 in 1886. 14 years old. The destiny of Christian and his son is quite well known. C J M Christenson as he called himself in the US has living grandchildren.
I am currently locating a couple of Orust emigrants and their families. They are;
Edla Maria Johansson and her children who in 1897 left Uddevalla to join husband and father in New York.
Martin Johannesson/Eliasson b. Sept 25, 1870 in Langelanda. He left Sweden around 1891-1894. He's described on page 29 in the book about Emigrants from East Orust. Martin supposedly lived in the area RI/Maine and had three children.
